The catalogue presents the research conducted for the exhibition “Ambienti 1956-2010. Environments by Women Artists II”, which brings together the contributions of eighteen women artists from different continents and generations: Micol Assaël, Monica Bonvicini, Judy Chicago, Lygia Clark, Laura Grisi, Zaha Hadid, Aleksandra Kasuba, Kimsooja, Christina Kubisch, Lea Lublin, Nalini Malani, Marta Minujín, Tania Mouraud, Pipilotti Rist, Martha Rosler, Esther Stocker, Nanda Vigo and Tsuruko Yamazaki. Conceived as a study tool, the volume brings together essays and a conversation on the theme of environments from 1956 to 1976, a visual chronology, an extensive apparatus section with a list of exhibitions and a specific bibliography, and critical files on the works exhibited. A rich iconographic collection of about 500 photographs, including historical and documentary images, installation views, drawings and sketches, reconstructs the history of the environments and the first exhibitions in which they were displayed. The result is an editorial project that traces a rewriting of art history and the role of women artists in the last fifty years.
