Details
From the post-World War II period to the fervour of rebuilding, from the sleepy Venice of the 1950s to images documenting the entrance of huge cruise ships into the Lagoon, some 200 photographs tell the story of Italy from the 1950s to today, designing an evocative map of this country. Published in conjunction with the exhibition at MAXXI, the book contains two critical essays contextualizing the work of Gianni Berengo Gardin, an interview with the photographer, and a rich selection of images that document the course through the exhibition. The result is a vibrant story of the history and land of Italy, as the author himself states: “I have always loved photographing our country. I like to get to know the people I portray, to live in close contact with the subjects of my pictures as long as it takes to understand how they live.”
