The stadium is not just a physical space but a kaleidoscope for observing a multitude of dimensions of architectural, urban, economic, anthropological, political, and artistic significance. This volume, which accompanies the first exhibition in Italy dedicated to stadiums, analyzes their transformation over time and space, through an unprecedented comparative and interdisciplinary reading structured across different narrative registers: interviews, essays, photographic projects, and anthologies. The focus on Italian stadiums and the ongoing debate surrounding their modernization is complemented by an analysis of the sociological aspects that characterize these structures and the diverse audiences who frequent them. A series of short essays then explores the relationship between stadiums and the arts from the late 19th century to the present. The volume is rounded out with fifty entries on fifty Italian and international venues, from Archibald Leitch to Herzog & de Meuron, from Pier Luigi Nervi to Renzo Piano, as well as a series of photographic anthologies, including two previously unpublished by Stefano Graziani and Filippo Romano.
